Conserving Water

TIP – Strategic Planting: Save flowers and plants that require a good supply of water for flatter ground. The earth in sloped terrain doesn’t do a great job of holding on to water, and this can leave you watering the foliage that you plant there far too often… and sometimes without even getting good results!

For added greenery in these areas, opt instead for cacti, moss, and other forms of groundcover that won’t place such high demands on your water bill. Adding plants of this kind to sloped terrain will also help prevent soil erosion over time!

TIP – Keep A Truly Green Lawn: Gone are the days in which we could dump as much water as we wanted onto our lawns, and combine it with chemical fertilizers to have a lawn so thick and green that it almost didn’t look natural. The hike in water prices in recent years alone forbids this, but an increasing number of municipalities are instituting bylaws that give people assigned days during which they can water their lawns… and fines if they do not comply! Let your lawn become a more natural green.

TIP – Adjust The Blade Height On Your Mower: For savings on gasoline/electricity and water, set your lawnmower’s blade-depth a little higher – shorter lawns need more water more often to help them avoid being burned by the sun. You’ll also save money on electricity or gas because you won’t have to use the mower as often, and it won’t have to work so hard. You may get years more out of it before you need a replacement, too!

TIP – Install Energy Saving Faucets: These are very cheap, and you don’t need an electrician to install them. The can cut down 40 percent of the water you use instantly… Most people don’t even notice a difference!

TIP – Replace Old Rubber Washers: They just don’t last forever, so if yyou can’t remember the last time they were changed, chances are you’ve got a leak! Washers cost cents… So get ‘em all replaced today and be sure you’re not paying for water that you aren’t using.

TIP – Use Water Only For Purposes That Require It: That means that when you’re clearing leaves or dirt from your walk, driveway or outter walls, go for the broom instead of the hose. If you really need to get at the sort of tough stains that can build-up on aluminum siding, use a bucket and a sponge instead of wasting unknown gallons with a hose or pressure-washer.

TIP – Install a Low-Flow Showerhead: Showers and baths usually make up the biggest demand for water in a household. Most people are surprised at the pressure that these new, energy-saving showerheads put out.

TIP – Aerate Your Flow: Still not enough savings for you? If you attach an additional device called a “faucet aerator” to the taps that get used most often you can save an additional 50 percent of the water you normally use!
