The Windy City Goes Solar
An agreement has been reached between nuclear power giant Exelon and municipal authorities to build the US’s largest urban solar power plant near Chicago, Illinois. “We’re a nuclear company,” said senior VP Tom O’Neill. “But we know which way the wind blows, no pun intended.”
On their website, Exelon boasts their goal “to reduce, offset or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020.” They have already eliminated almost 6 million metric tons of emissions, which they regard as a carbon offset equivalent to removing approximately one million cars from the road, meaning that they are already one third of the way to acheiving this goal.
The $60 million project nearing completion as of the writing of this article, and was only made possible through a federal loan guarantee. The plant’s engineers credit the recently passed federal stimulus package legislation with enabling the project planners’ vision to become a reality.

Other manufacturers are carrying out similar projects: Florida Power & Light Co has announced that $350 million worth of solar panels could meet the electricity needs of a city that was effectively planned and developed with smart-grid sustainability reliance in mind. Another company, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., has launched a program to generate up to 500 megawatts of solar power for northern and central California.
Still, commercially manufactured residential solar power systems can be quite expensive, and anyone living outside the most heavily populated urban areas will surely be waiting some time before their grids even start to go green: many smart consumers are learning the effectiveness of simple do-it-yourself solar power concepts that both give them a jump-start on the next energy crisis by saving them as much as $2000 annually. Also widely available are federal tax rebates that can instantly put as much as $7000 back in their pockets!
