Simple Concepts That Can Cut Your Hydro Bill In Half
Being environmentally friendly can be easy and cheap. In fact, by changing a few simple habits you can actually save yourself thousands of dollars a year! Green energy technologies have never been cheaper or more widely available. Along with the installation of residential solar panels and wind turbines, these simple measures can all add up to big savings! So if you want to lower your hydro bill and help out the environment at the same time here’s some things to consider:
Being Smart About Using the Stove and Oven
Try to be more conservative by using lids on pots while heating things on the stove. Pick up a small toaster oven for cooking small items instead of using the electric oven. Allow time for frozen food to fully thaw thereby cutting down your cooking time. And be sure to keep your oven door closed when it is running and resist the temptation to look too often. Did you k now that even one look inside a hot oven can allow as much as 20% of the heat to escape, and forces your oven to draw even more power to maintain its internal temperature.
Keeping Food Cold
Try to decide what you’ll make for a meal or a snack without opening the fridge door first. Also, overfilling your freezer forces it to work really hard to keep everything inside cold. Even if you follow these guidelines, you should always make sure that the coils on your fridge are cleaned regularly to ensure that they enjoy a maximum level of efficiency.
Dishwashers
If you load your dishwasher correctly the first time you won’t run the risk of having to run some through again when they come out unclean. Don’t forget that people also managed to get this job done for centuries before there were dishwashers, or even electricity: if you can spare the time, try doing them by hand. If you clean your dishes in the sink as you use them the task won’t be so intimidating. Try putting on a good album or radio show and think of it as a time for quiet introspection. If you don’t have the time, and must use a dishwasher, try air-drying your dishes instead of using your dishwasher’s wasteful and expensive drying feature.
Laundry
Be sure to always wash and rinse clothes in cold water instead of hot. For work clothes that have become especially dirty, you can always pre-wash them by allowing them to soak for a while in a bucket first. This will enable you to avoid using the costly heavy duty setting on your washing machine. Most people also use way more detergent than they need. If you use dryer sheets, rip them in half. And don’t fall for the generous amounts of soap that you see actors use in laundry detergent commercials: Remember, those companies have an interest in getting you to use as much of their soap as possible since they are the ones who stand to profit! You should also never overload your dryer, both because of the environmental impact of such energy sucking machines, and how much this can shorten their lifespan leading them to an early grave in the dump.
Air Conditioning Alternatives
By carefully positioning a few electric fans can create an impressive cross-breeze that can be even more soothing on a hot summer day. Keeping blinds drawn on windows that face the sun during days like these can also help keep the internal temperature of your home at a minimum. If you must use your air conditioner, ensure that it is clear of debris and dust, clean or replace the filter as necessary, and remember to remove the cover (if your unit has one)!
Resist the Temptation to Crank the Heat
While it’s always very convenient to turn up the thermostat as soon as we feel a chill, sometimes an extra blanket is just as good. It also costs nothing to put on an extra layer. Ceiling fans when kept low can help distribute warm air throughout a home without creating too much of a draught. They are also far more energy efficient than the blower of your furnace. In addition, new, programmable thermostats can be used to automatically keep heat at a minimum, and then switch themselves on before you get home so that the house is at a pleasant internal temperature when you arrive.
Smart Lighting
Let the sun in by pulling back the blinds if it is dark inside. People are often surprised to find that this actually does a better job of lighting their rooms, even if the sun is not on the same side of the house! Choose energy efficient bulbs instead of conventional ones: the popularization of new proposed laws are soon to make these older style bulbs illegal in most areas, anyhow. Even though environmentally friendly bulbs can be almost twice as expensive, with regular bulbs last up to six times as long, too!
Computers
Most people aren’t aware that they can adjust the brightness setting on their monitors to save power. Studies also show that newer LCD monitors use far less power than older, heavier Shutting your monitor off when you’re not at the computer is a no-brainer. But what most people don’t realize is that their computers continue to draw power when in so-called energy saving modes. If you’re going out for the day and know you won’t be using your machine for several hours, power it right down and even unplug your power bar from the wall. Now you can be sure that you’re not wasting one single watt!
