Sharp’s Solar Powered Cellphones

The German electronics giant has announced plans to expand upon its already-impressive solar tech sector to meet the needs of customers who want leaner and cleaner options for the routine charging of personal electronic devices, like cell phones.

Solar power (photovoltaic) technology has come a long way in the last few years, spurned by competition and rising consumer demand. Pocket-sized solar cells can generate an impressive battery charge in about as much time as it takes a conventional AC wall charger. Prototype applications currently include digital cameras, cellphones, smart phones, laptops, portable DVD players, mP3 players, and other devices that use a small, 0.8mm solar cell with 13 percent efficiency to dramatically extend battery life between charging sessions. They also soon expect to replace the common battery-powered remote control with solar variants that will obtain all of the power they need through a single solar cell (with an internal rechargeable battery to store a modest charge for night time use).

Sharp has even gone to great lengths to ensure that their newest cells are double-wired which will ensure that a panel continues to operate at near-total efficiency when a single cell is damaged, as opposed to panels wired along a singular series that is rendered useless if even one cell stops functioning ‘ an especially attractive as an export to other manufacturers who specialize in portable devices that are subject to more wear and tear than other technologies.

Beyond these advancements, Sharp also has plans to completely rethink the fundamental concept behind silicon solar cells: New prototypes on the drawing board have eliminated any top-side wiring, giving them an increased receptive surface area that could boost a single solar cell’s output by as much as 20 percent!

Recently, the German solar cell industry suffered a hit when confronted with lower overhead costs enjoyed by Chinese competitors, but if Sharp is right, and their ingenuity pays off, we may see Sharp become the preferred manufacturer of solar cells for residential and off-grid heating and appliance use as well. Be sure to watch the company’s stock closely.
