Seeing Green: Can You Afford Not To Use Renewable Energy?
The cynics among us tend to agree that most people will not the right thing unless forced. Instead, as a species we opt for the easiest, safest, and above all, the cheapest solutions to our problems. But just as clean ‘n’ green energy technologies are becoming more available, and more affordable to the average person, the cogs of industry and bureaucracy are turning together to start making it increasingly inconvenient to resort to our dirty, old ways.
Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s President, recently announced plans for a brand new tax that aims to combat the damage caused by global warming. This tax comes into effect next year and will apply to the use of oil, gas and coal. Offenders will be taxed 17 Euros (about $30) for every tonne of carbon dioxide emitted.
It will be phased in gradually and will apply to everyone – households and businesses alike, but will exclude heavy industries and power firms included in the EU’s emissions trading plan. According to one French newspaper, the tax will apply to 70% of France’s carbon emissions and will bring in about 4.3 billion euros of annual revenue.
Al Gore, former VP of the USA and the mastermind behind the controversial ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ documentary, has announced that the coming virtual energy tax brought in under the USA’s new “cap-and-trade” legislation will cause utility bills to jump significantly for consumers in the USA.
“But it is the awareness itself that will drive the change, and one of the ways it will drive the change is through global government and global agreements,” he said.
If you have been considering an investment in green technologies like solar power or wind power, it looks like it will never be more profitable for the individual to do so.
