Q: What If I Can’t Find A Motor Like The One In The Video?
posted February 21st 2010 at 8:34PM
A:
I can’t seem to stress this enough, but you really don’t want to get too hung-up on the specific models of components that we used in the Power4Home learning DVD. Remember, the Power4Home system is designed to be adaptable AND affordable! Keep this in mind when ordering any components online as well, since the closer to home that you manage to acquire the components you need, the lower the overall cost of your project will be!
But moreover, the size of the alternator you need for maximum efficiency should be determined by the average wind speed on your property. That, and whatever you can get your hands on without going to too much trouble or expense. You can get used motors of different kinds online or in your local hardware store every day. The size of the motor is usually a good indicator of its output capacity, but here’s the thing… You will want to size your generator appropriately for the average wind speed you get on your property. If it’s too large, the lower winds will likely have a much harder time driving your turbine and your output will be rather low.
On the other hand, if you go with a motor that is too small, high wind speeds will overdrive it, potentially burning it or your batteries out, so pay close attention to the output and total handling capacity of both your generator and inverter. Using more than three blades is OK, but keep in mind that this will add to the weight of the turbine itself, and may inhibit performance.
Sincerely,

John Russel
