BlogHow often do you run into this scenario? You get home with an armful of things you needs to bring inside. You turn on the garage light to see what you’re doing and head inside. But by this time you’ve probably forgotten that your front door light is still burning away outside.
I have to admit… On occasion, I’ve let lights burn all night without thinking about them until I see them still on in the morning! If only they’d just shut themselves OFF automatically, so I didn’t have to worry about it. Better yet, what if they also turned ON as I approached the door?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the incredible motion sensor – available in any hardware or home supply store! And if you’re concerned about security, they’re one of the best deterrents against home invasion money can buy!
Materials
• Motion sensor light fixture of your choice
• Existing regular outdoor light fixture
Instructions
Step 1: Turn off the power.
Step 2: Remove old fixture with an appropriate screwdriver bit.
Step 3: May need to add a center mounting bracket for the new fixture.
Step 4: Connect new fixture (Black to black, white to white, and ground to ground)
Step 5: Check to ensure that you have achieved a water-tight fit with the gasket (if not, simply use a little silicone glaze).
Step 6: Consult the manufacturer’s instructions in order to set the light’s intensity and program its internal timer
Step 7: And that’s it, you’re done. Just need to test out your light.

Chris, I think that was a good idea for you to remind everyone of the motion detector. I use a light fixture on my front steps that is solar powered and motion detector. It is great for coming home in the dark, lights the steps for us. It stays on for one minute and then goes off. A real safety feature at night.
Chris:the motion sensor is a great accommodation for .convenience,safety and security.But in my experience when the wind is blowing or critter,s are roaming around with in the sensors range they can be a pain in the butt. For any of you interested you can buy Solar Powered LED motion detector spotlights at a reasonable price.
I have two styles; both the same brand. One is an outside wall mount with a built in solar panel, designed for stairways, that I mounted over my sundeck stairs in the back (south) of my house. In the front (north side of my house) I installed the model that looks like any other motion detector spotlight with a separate 7 inch solar panel mounted on the east outside wall to catch morning to noon sun for recharging. It has a hinge on the bracket so I can reach up and turn it to a better angle (further south than east) if I need a better charge.
Wish I could upload a pic of them or the boxes they came in. Am I allowed to mention brand names here? I’ll risk providing an address so you can order one for yourself…… (the contact info on the box):
